Optimal Living - Virtual Tele-Mental Health Services

Bringing Psychotherapy to You

Our modern age is characterized by fear, danger and insecurity. Depression and anxiety, as well as substance use disorders, are common. The search for happiness can feel overwhelming and impossible. But, Psychotherapy offers answers to many, and is a way of bringing a greater sense of peace, and even true happiness to us.  Through it, we can learn to conquer our demons, and to feel more control over our decision-making, and responsibility for our course through life.

Optimal Living is a virtual, tele-mental health service that brings psychotherapy to you. We specialize in treating a range of behavioral and mental health conditions, while aiming for optimal functioning and wellness. Our approach emphasizes emotional health and happiness, promoting overall well-being for our clients, and includes a journey not only through insight and  sound self-examination, but the acquisition of new life skills, and guidance in applying these.

                           What is Psychotherapy?

"Psychotherapy is an approach for treating mental health issues by talking with a psychologist, psychiatrist or another mental health provider. It also is known as talk therapy, counseling, psychosocial therapy or, simply, therapy.

During psychotherapy, you learn about your specific issues and how your thoughts, emotions and behaviors affect your moods. Talk therapy helps you learn how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills".  - Mayo Clinic

What to expect in a Session?

An individual session usually runs for a 50-minute therapy hour. We (therapist & client) sit facing each other, within a relaxed setting (you in your home via computer or cell phone/me in my "video office"). We introduce ourselves. An initial individual session involves  information gathering, and you expressing what issue or  circumstances led to coming to therapy. What do you hope to change and improve? What efforts have already been made to alter the presenting concern's impact on you? What is your motivation for change? Your history of growing up, your family and their impact on you. Your education, career/work, relationships, and what life means to you.

Therapeutic interventions may be about learning new skills, or may lead to longer-term exploration and inner work. Sometimes the work has a narrow focus, and sometimes it is broad in scope. Each client's circumstances, problems, and challenges are unique. Regardless of its scope in someone's life, psychotherapy can be productive and quality of life enhancing. Therapy is an opportunity to work collaboratively with your therapist to improve your life. This will be about clarifying your goals, and determining what things may be interfering with your health, happiness, and satisfaction.  This is not a passive process, but involves an active search and exploration. Ultimately it involves hard work, and taking responsibility for your life. Therapy may be taken on for immediate problems, possibly short-term, that interfere with happiness or satisfaction. Therapy may also address mental disorders, or even existential or spiritual concerns. These are "growth" and "meaning of life" kinds of issues, that may be further addressed through selected reading, recommended activities, and social engagement. Change and growth is a process, with emerging paths and endeavors to add to your life. It is dynamic and a reflection of your healing and increased engagement with your world. And it is about you and this journey that we call Life. Therapy certainly becomes a larger exploration of meaning and purpose, and what we need to feel that it has been a journey "well done". And, as a therapist, I can assist you with preparations for that journal.

Treatment Modalities & Focus

Couples & Relationships

Relationships are difficult. Join me for assistance  navigating the "rough waters". I use a combination of Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Assertiveness Training, and "common sense" skills improving your listening skills, communicating more effectively, being more empathetic, and forging a strong alliance as a couple.

Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression rob our lives of energy, a sense of engagement, meaning & purpose, and fun. Yet, both of these are treatable. Some degree of success is very attainable with psychotherapy, and in some instances, medications, may also become a viable part of the treatment plan. Psychotherapies including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and well-planned self-care can be highly effective and positively life-changing.

Life Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress

A more serious form of anxiety is found with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the result of serious, often life-threatening, events. Life stressors, like assault, kidnapping, rape, serious accidents, seeing a loved one murdered, torture, and combat exposure, can all lead to the development of an enduring array of PTSD symptoms. PTSD is treatable with CBT, Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR).

 Chronic Pain & Health Issues

Pain and health issues, chronic or terminal, can ravage a person's sense of well-being, confidence, and emotional wellness. We explore the meaning of pain and health limitations, and  seek to unravel the negative impact these have. Life can be meaningful and happy, even in the place of health tragedies and limitations. We work with CBT, hypnosis, EMDR, and mindfulness practice.

Grief/Traumatic Loss/End-of-Life

Loss, and the resulting grief, is a part and parcel of our lives. We all lose meaningful others. We all experience loss, in its multiple forms. Grief is a part of the journey in the face of loss. Psychotherapy can assist with processing your loss, and making some peace with it. Don't be alone with it. Let psychotherapy help you be with your loss and grief. Find a new sense of meaning, direction, and focus, as you work with your loss. Multiple tools.
